Organization Overview:  Born out of reverent remembrance and continuing advocacy for a yet unpunished crime against humanity, the Armenian Genocide Centennial Committee of Greater Detroit was formed to organize commemorative events throughout 2015 for the Centennial Anniversary of the Armenian Genocide. Comprised of over 15 of Greater Detroit’s leading Armenian-American organizations, the committee’s goals include: Honoring, through commemorative events, the memory of the 1.5 million Armenian victims who were systematically murdered by the Ottoman Turkish authorities in the first Genocide of the 20th Century. Demand universal recognition of the Armenian Genocide, reparations from the perpetrators’ legal successors (the Republic of Turkey), and restoration to the legal owners of all Armenian historic lands, churches and institutions. Increase public awareness of the Armenian Genocide in particular, as well as all other genocides. A 100 year-old crime against humanity that remains unpunished In 1915, the Ottoman Turkish government systematically, and with determination, exterminated the indigenous Armenian people on their historic homeland -- what is today the Republic of Turkey. It began on April 24, 1915, when Armenian leaders were rounded up by the Ottoman Turkish authorities and publicly executed, and continued for eight years. This methodical murdering of a nation included the killing of the male population, use of labor camps, death marches of women and children across the Syrian Desert, and the re-population of non-Armenians on historic Armenian lands. Please visit www.theforgotten.org for more information. In 2015, local, national, and international events will take place to remember the 1.5 million Armenian victims and to demand that justice be served for this crime against humanity.
