Organization Overview:  We are a diverse, morally conscious coalition of many community groups fighting the oppression of immigrants. Mission Our mission is to • End the targeting and oppression of our immigrant population by our government and by others in our society • Stop immigrant families from being torn apart, like mothers taken away from their babies, by our government • Share the positive contributions that immigrants have made to our country since its founding, right up to the present • Expose the exploitation of immigrants by corporate entities that benefit financially from immigrant incarceration • Expose the relationship between those corporations and anti-immigrant laws and practices • Remind others that, historically, the targeting of scapegoat populations is a process that eventually consumes broad swaths of the society in which it occurs • Remind people of relevant moral teachings, such as Matthew 25:34-40 • Remind people of one of the most profound statements of human rights in history, a statement found at the beginning of our Declaration of Independence: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness." Not "all landed gentry," not "all citizens," not even "all voters," but "all men" (today:people). • Stop the clear violations of human rights and atrocities that are happening in our community, and finally • Act to support the God-given rights of all people to live in a safe and just society regardless of documentation. Description The Washtenaw Interfaith Coalition for Immigrant Rights (WICIR) is an ever-expanding organization of morally conscious people, who are members of numerous community groups and faith-based organizations. We are diverse in race and ethnicity, national origin, language, gender, age, abilities, gender identities, sexual orientations, and socio-economic class status, and immigration status.
