Organization Name: Freedom House
Organization Overview: Freedom House is a temporary home for survivors of persecution from around the world seeking legal asylum in the United States and Canada. We are the only agency in the United States that provides all services needed by those fleeing persecution in their home country
Each year, hundreds of men, women and children arrive at Freedom House seeking shelter and help in rebuilding their lives in safety and freedom. They typically arrive exhausted, hungry and traumatized, with little more than the clothes they are wearing. Freedom House has the capacity to house 35 people at a time as they seek asylum. However, we take great pride in not turning away anyone who is eligible for asylum, which means we nearly always operate above capacity.

Organization Name: Global Talent Retention Initiative
Organization Overview: GTRI focuses on strengthening and diversifying the state's economy through the retention of top international talent. By retaining international students, GTRI is a catalyst to lessening the skills gap in the STEM fields especially, and cultivating a climate in which Michigan businesses can be competitive in the new economy. GTRI collaborates with the Governor's office, the Office for New Americans, Global Detroit, over 30 Michigan Universities, the University Research Corridor (URC), the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA), Michigan's economic development agencies, ethnic chambers, professional organizations, and employers throughout the state.
GTRI is funded by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) and the New Economy Initiative (NEI), and is housed in partnership with Prima Civitas.
GTRI was originally formed as a result of the Global Detroit Study about the impact of immigrant talent on the region’s economy. Studies have shown that immigrants disproportionately contribute to economic growth, employment, and wage gains. In addition, more than 50% of PhDs and sometimes as much as 40% of master’s degrees in the STEM fields (Science, Technology, Engineering, & Mathematics) are awarded each year in the U.S. to international students. Since IT and engineering are the fastest growing industries, it is becoming increasingly difficult to find qualified candidates for high level tech positions if international students are not considered as part of an employer’s applicant pool.

Organization Name: Lemkin House
Organization Overview: The mission of Lemkin House is to provide shelter and support— physical, legal, social, and spiritual— for those people in the West Michigan area who are seeking asylum in the United States.
We are supported and encouraged by many Grand Rapids-based social service agencies, legal clinics and private attorneys, and members of religious and academic communities.
The name “Lemkin House” was chosen to honor the memory of a man who dedicated his life with an absolute passion to give ethnic slaughter a name and make it a crime. In doing so, we hope to continue his legacy and bring a name left in the shadows back into the light. (Clink on his name in drop-down menu to learn more about his life.)
We incorporated rosemary into our logo from Shakespeare’s line in Hamlet:
“There’s rosemary, that’s for remembrance; pray, love, remember.”

Organization Name: Lighthouse Immigrant Advocates
Organization Overview: Bringing stability to West Michigan families & communities through legal services & advocacy
Lighthouse Immigrant Advocates (LIA) is a law office that brings stability to West Michigan families and communities through legal services and advocacy. Families that are constantly in fear of deportation; families that lack access to quality, low-cost legal services; families that are unauthorized to work; and/or families are trapped in violent situations, struggle to maintain stability and economic security. Unstable families and families suffering from economic insecurity lead to instability in our communities, schools, and workplaces. This is an issue that impacts everyone in our community: rich and poor, young and old, citizen and noncitizen.
Founded in response to this need within one of our most vulnerable communities, LIA provides high-quality legal services for a nominal fee. LIA also advocates through community education, internships and volunteer opportunities, and public awareness campaigns. These services work towards insuring family economic security, intact and unified family units, and detecting and preventing violence in our community.
LIA staff and board of directors are members of this community who are passionate about serving this community. Anyone, regardless of race, color, religion, creed, disability, age, national origin, sexual orientation, or gender identity or expression, are welcome to seek and receive services at LIA. We value human life and dignity. We value social justice. And we value a strong and stable community.
