Organization Overview:  Action works with organizations across the nation to reform America's immigration laws and ensure civil rights for all people, native born and immigrant. From informational conferences to organized bus trips for rallies in Washington D.C., CRI works to ensure the 7.6% of immigrant families in Lansing have a community voice heard by national ears. In February, the Civil Rights For Immigrants (CRI) task force took on the Secretary of State decision to deny DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) grantees their right to driver’s licenses. They met with allies, rallied at the state capital, met with the governor’s staff and held a press conference when the Secretary of State finally overturned her decision and gave DACA grantees their right to a driver’s license. CRI also created a free conference in March, called “Engaging our Community for Reform,” 200 people attended. This conference focused on immigrants, advocates, youth focusing on higher education, knowing your rights, and psychological well-being of immigrants in America. In April, Action organized a bus including constituents from four different cities to Washington D.C to join millions for a national rally where we met with our congressmen and senators advocating for comprehensive immigration reform. In May, the CRI task force organized a statewide prayer vigil outside Congressman Mike Rogers’s office. Over 100 people from Kalamazoo, Grand Rapids, Saginaw, Battle Creek and Lansing, demanded that Rogers and the House of Representatives pass comprehensive immigrations reform. In June, CRI task force also organized an “immigration story telling” event attended by 100 Lansing residents. In July, we rallied outside of GOP headquarters calling for immigration reform. In October Action of Greater Lansing organized a March and Rally outside of Congressman Mike Rogers requesting a face to face meeting. We got a public response from the Congressman that fueled a letter campaign to the editor regarding Roger’s actions. CRI Meets Monthly Last Tuesday of the Month at 7pm Cristo Rey Church: 201 W. Organization Name:  Freedom House
Organization Overview:  Freedom House is a temporary home for survivors of persecution from around the world seeking legal asylum in the United States and Canada. We are the only agency in the United States that provides all services needed by those fleeing persecution in their home country Each year, hundreds of men, women and children arrive at Freedom House seeking shelter and help in rebuilding their lives in safety and freedom. They typically arrive exhausted, hungry and traumatized, with little more than the clothes they are wearing. Freedom House has the capacity to house 35 people at a time as they seek asylum. However, we take great pride in not turning away anyone who is eligible for asylum, which means we nearly always operate above capacity.

Organization Name:  Lemkin House
Organization Overview:  The mission of Lemkin House is to provide shelter and support— physical, legal, social, and spiritual— for those people in the West Michigan area who are seeking asylum in the United States. We are supported and encouraged by many Grand Rapids-based social service agencies, legal clinics and private attorneys, and members of religious and academic communities. The name “Lemkin House” was chosen to honor the memory of a man who dedicated his life with an absolute passion to give ethnic slaughter a name and make it a crime. In doing so, we hope to continue his legacy and bring a name left in the shadows back into the light. (Clink on his name in drop-down menu to learn more about his life.) We incorporated rosemary into our logo from Shakespeare’s line in Hamlet: “There’s rosemary, that’s for remembrance; pray, love, remember.”
