Organization Name:  Polish Women's Hall of Fame
Organization Overview:  Polish women have long had a reputation for beauty, intelligence, and courage. Poland herself has appeared in iconography, especially in the Romantic era, as a woman bravely suffering oppression, defying her tormentors or grieving her sons and daughters. People call to mind Queen Jadwiga, the legendary Princess Wanda or the brilliant Marie Sklodowska-Curie when Polish women are mentioned. But the full story of their accomplishments finds almost no place in the popular history of Poland. Yet, it is a rich, inspiring and complex story that gives us new perspectives on the history of Poland and Polish communities throughout the world. We can never fully understand who we are until we join the histories of our mothers to that of our fathers. It is for this reason that the Piast Institute founded the Polish Women’s Hall of Fame as a record of the story of Polish Women and as a resource for our community, schools and universities, and especially for young Polish women—and indeed young women everywhere so that they might know and remember. The Polish Women’s Hall of Fame is a virtual exhibit hosted by the Piast Institute that seeks to honor and raise awareness of the stories of women’s lives and contributions to Polish and Polonian culture and history, and the contributions of women of Polish birth or descent to the world. Housed online, the project provides biographies, photographs, bibliographies, and articles on both individual prominent women and on the more general history of Polish women both in Poland and abroad. Individuals or groups may be nominated to the Hall of Fame in any of six categories: Arts and Humanities Religion Science and Education Public Life and Service Sports Philanthropy Galeria Sławy Polskich Kobiet Galeria Sławy Polskich Kobiet jest otwarta dla wszystkich kobiet urodzonych w Polsce lub posiadających polskie pochodzenie, które wniosły znaczący wkład dla świata lub życia, kultury, historii Polski czy Polonii. Ogloszenia o wybranych osobach zostaną podane do wiadomości w dniach 8 marca i 8 września. The Ramallah Club of Metropolitan Detroit is part of the American Federation of Ramallah, Palestine which is a non-political, non-profit organization IRC 501(c) (7). Each member can trace our family lines to the founders of the city of Ramallah, which serves as the provisional seat of Government of Palestine. Our purpose is to help maintain the culture and heritage of the Ramallah people and to educate our children and the public our culture and heritage. As one of the largest communities of descendants from Ramallah in the United States, we are proud to serve the Detroit community in many ways. Our History Ramallah PhotoThe early settlers to Detroit started arriving in the 1920’s. As they settled and opened businesses they encouraged others from the ‘Old Country’ to join them. As the community grew, the idea of forming a Ramallah Club in Detroit first surfaced in the late 1940’s. A small group of students first created a student organization, the Hathihe Ramallah (this is Ramallah) magazine on the campus of Wayne State University in 1947. The Hathihe Ramallah magazine served as a vehicle to maintain social ties with other immigrants from Ramallah throughout America. Shortly afterwards, the Ramallah Club of Detroit incorporated in Wayne County as a social, cultural and educational organization. In the early 1950’s, meetings were held in homes of our members. As the community grew, the Ramallah Club started to meet at the YMCA on West Grand Boulevard at Dexter. In the early 1960’s, they started meeting at the YMCA on Grand River at Beech Daly. In 1992, the Ramallah Club of Detroit purchased its clubhouse in Westland. This property also serves as headquarters of the American Federation of Ramallah, Palestine which was established in 1958. Today, the Ramallah Club of Detroit has an active membership of three hundred amongst 600 households in the Metropolitan Detroit area. We are proud of the success and accomplishments that the Detroit community has produced over the last fifty years.

Organization Overview:  Refugee Services Refugees are people of all ages who are forced from their own countries by war or political unrest and who cannot return for fear of persecution because of their race, ethnicity, religion or political affiliations. Many spend years in refugee camps before they are given permission to enter the United States. They arrive with little more than the clothes they are wearing. Refugees come here seeking protection and a chance to build a new life. They are eager to learn, to work and to become productive contributors to society. As they become settled, they build businesses, create jobs, revitalize neighbourhoods, fuel the economy and strengthen the tax base, enriching their communities. Lutheran Social Services of Michigan has been the Michigan affiliate of Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service since the 1950s. In 2002, Lutheran Social Services became the Michigan affiliate of Episcopal Migration Ministries as well. As the largest refugee resettlement agency in the state, Lutheran Social Services has resettled thousands of people from dozens of countries in Europe, Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Central and South America.

Organization Name:  Academia de San Diego
Organization Overview:  San Juan Diego Academy is a K-8 Catholic School designed to serve the educational needs of Latino immigrant families and is the only Catholic School in the Diocese of Grand Rapids serving primarily Latino children. The School is located on the campus of Holy Name of Jesus Church, but serves families from various neighborhoods throughout the greater Grand Rapids community. San Juan Diego Academy operates through the support and financial investment of six Catholic Parishes: the Cathedral of St. Andrew, Holy Name of Jesus, St. Joseph the Worker, St. Francis Xavier/Our Lady of Guadalupe, Our Lady of Sorrow and St. Mary. For more information, please visit the School’s website at www.sanjuandiegoacademy.com With the support of the Bishop, San Juan Diego Academy opened its doors in August 2011, through the collaboration, financial investment and shared vision of six urban Catholic parishes: the Cathedral of St. Andrew, Holy Name of Jesus, St. Joseph the Worker, St. Francis Xavier/Our Lady of Guadalupe, Our Lady of Sorrow and St. Mary. All six of the partnering parishes have a strong Latino presence. Recognizing that a single parish school was no longer feasbile in an urban community, the establishment of San Juan Diego Academy allowed us to chart a new course for Catholic education in our community. By working together, we have been able to establish a sustainable model for Catholic education in the 21st century and ensure that a high quality Catholic education remains a viable option for families living in our city’s most economically challenged neighborhoods. For over 150 years, Catholic schools in the Diocese of Grand Rapids have educated the children of immigrants, struggling to start a new life in the U.S. These schools helped them succeed. At San Juan Diego Academy, we strive to carry on this tradition and provide a high quality, faith-centered education designed to meet the needs of Latino immigrant children in our community.
