Organization Overview: Windsor, Ontario, Canada’s southernmost city has a rich ethnic and cultural identity. From its beginnings as First Nations, and later French agricultural settlements, Windsor has been an inviting and attractive destination – welcoming all those who arrive.
Following the War of 1812 and throughout the 19th century, many ethnic communities settled in Windsor. Immigrant groups built their own churches and organized ethno-cultural clubs in order to meet their religious, social and cultural needs.
As immigration increased, so did the needs of newcomers, particularly in the areas of reception, integration, and adult education. Organizations were established in order to provide welcoming services and settlement assistance.
Also identified as vitally important, was the need to preserve and celebrate the heritage and practices of the many cultures now established in the city. A number of groups were formed to ensure that traditions and customs were not only shared, but also celebrated.
In October of 1971, Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau adopted Multiculturalism as the official policy of the government of Canada. With an initial grant from the Ministry of Community and Social Services, a meeting of over 100 ethno-cultural clubs and service agencies in Windsor and Essex County was held. At the meeting it was decided to establish a formal organization.
On April 8, 1973, the Multicultural Council of Windsor and Essex County was officially established.
The Multicultural Council hosted regular meetings to address the concerns of ethno-cultural communities, provided guidance and counseling during settlement to Canada, and volunteers to assist with translation and interpretation.
In June 1974 a $3,500 grant from the Ministry of Culture and Recreation supported the Multicultural Council’s inaugural Multicultural Festival at the riverfront. The following year, with co-operation from the Freedom Festival, a bazaar was held at the Cleary Auditorium featuring fourteen ethnic food booths together with a large exhibit of cultural artefacts.
In 1976, the Ontario Government announced a new cultural grants program. Formal planning expanded the annual festival to include multiple ethno-cultural villages. Two weekends in June were designated to celebrate Windsor’s diversity. On June 18, 1976 began a long-standing and popular tradition known as the Carrousel of Nations festival.
Over time, the Multicultural Council modified its services enhancing core programs such as cultural perseveration. Current programs, such as Settlement and Integration, Language and Skills, Translation and Interpretation, Health and Wellness, Education, Diversity, and Special Events, offers services to Windsor’s newcomers and the community at large. The goal remains to embrace our mission to create a welcoming community for all through education, community engagement, and the promotion of diversity and equality for all residents of Windsor and Essex County.

Identify existing resources and materials on cultural beliefs and practices [written material, modules on the web, etc];
Identify existing links from the Internet on culturally competent care.
5. IMPROVE THE HEALTH CARE OF THE ARAB-AMERICAN COMMUNITY THROUGH ADVOCACY AND EDUCATION.
IMPLEMENTATION:
Identify educational material aimed at the American-Arab community in Arabic or English;
Reach out to the American-Arab community through places of worship, physician offices, chamber of commerce, ACCESS and the like;
Bring care to the community [can be done through various means such as by recruiting interdisciplinary groups of health professional students engaged in
screening, health fairs, community projects carried out by students, and the like. Can be done during holidays; as well, joining with other nursing associations with similar interests as ours. In order to do this we need to know the major health concerns of the Arab community].

Organization Overview: Polish women have long had a reputation for beauty, intelligence, and courage.
Poland herself has appeared in iconography, especially in the Romantic era, as a woman bravely suffering oppression, defying her tormentors or grieving her sons and daughters. People call to mind Queen Jadwiga, the legendary Princess Wanda or the brilliant Marie Sklodowska-Curie when Polish women are mentioned. But the full story of their accomplishments finds almost no place in the popular history of Poland. Yet, it is a rich, inspiring and complex story that gives us new perspectives on the history of Poland and Polish communities throughout the world. We can never fully understand who we are until we join the histories of our mothers to that of our fathers.
It is for this reason that the Piast Institute founded the Polish Women’s Hall of Fame as a record of the story of Polish Women and as a resource for our community, schools and universities, and especially for young Polish women—and indeed young women everywhere so that they might know and remember.
The Polish Women’s Hall of Fame is a virtual exhibit hosted by the Piast Institute that seeks to honor and raise awareness of the stories of women’s lives and contributions to Polish and Polonian culture and history, and the contributions of women of Polish birth or descent to the world. Housed online, the project provides biographies, photographs, bibliographies, and articles on both individual prominent women and on the more general history of Polish women both in Poland and abroad.

Organization Overview: Refugees are people forced to leave their country of residence because of war or political turmoil. We are Michigan's largest private refugee resettlement organization. We provide sponsorship, immigration assistance, legal services and assistance with resettlement and acculturation. Since the mid-1970s, we have resettled thousands of refugees.
Resettlement Services
We lead newly arrived refugees through their confusing first months in the United States.

•help the refugees apply for Social Security cards and other necessary documents.

•refer the new arrivals to training in English as a second language

Employment Services
We are Michigan's primary contractor for job development and placement, vocational English language training and citizenship services.

Employers who hire refugees may qualify for tax credits or grants to provide tools and uniforms for refugees. The federal Match Grant program in Detroit and Grand Rapids, offers incentives to refugees who find work quickly and do not need to rely on public assistance. The program provides employment training, placement and transportation.
Translation Services
We can translate documents from the following languages into English: Arabic, Bosnian, Croatian, Romanian, Russian and Serbian. Documents can also be translated from English into any of these languages.
Legal Services
We offer professional, immigration legal services for refugees, asylees and immigrants at nominal fees, to help them in achieve independence and stability in the United States. These services include assistance with adjustment of status, naturalization, travel documents, and family visa petitions. The program has an accredited representative on staff who is recognized by the Board of Immigration Appeals (BIA), as well as interns who are students at local law schools. Coming soon: citizenship training classes to prepare naturalization applicants for the Civics and English portions of the naturalization test.
School Impact Program
We serve as a liaison with local K-12 schools, helping students with English instruction, translation and social adjustment. We help refugee parents understand the school environment and become more involved in their children’s education, and also provide support and resources for teachers of refugee students.
