Religious - Spiritual: Eastern Orthodox

Organization Overview:  Saints Peter & Paul Romanian Orthodox Church is a parish under the jurisdiction of The Romanian Orthodox Episcopate of America, headquartered in Detroit/Jackson, Michigan, having as its ruling Archbishop NATHANIEL (Popp). The current parish membership lists almost 400 dues-paying adults, but the parish ministers to a larger Romanian Orthodox community including children and non-committed communicants, visitors, etc. The parish is made-up of both American and Romanian born Orthodox Christians, which deems it necessary that the life of the parish is a bi-lingual one. However, special care is given to the realization that our practices and culture must, in some ways, adapt themselves to the American environment in order for us to have a greater impact on our community and future generations. Organization Overview:  The Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese of North America is an archdiocese of the Orthodox Patriarchate of Antioch and All the East. It traces its roots to first century Antioch (modern-day Antakya, Turkey), the city in which the disciples of Jesus Christ were first called Christians (Acts 11:26). The Patriarchate is led by His Beatitude John X from Damascus, Syria. In addition to its continuing presence in Syria and Lebanon, the Antiochian Patriarchate has archdioceses in Europe; Asia; North, Central and South America; and Australia and New Zealand. The Church of Antioch was established by the Apostles Paul and Barnabas in 42 A.D., with St. Peter serving for the next eight years as its first prelate. The Church of Antioch is one of the five ancient Patriarchates of the Christian Church, along with Alexandria, Constantinople, Jerusalem, and Rome. Antiochians are in full communion with other Orthodox Christian jurisdictions, such as the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America and the Orthodox Church in America, as well as many other Orthodox jurisdictions around the world. Welcome to the Diocese of Toledo and the Midwest, part of the Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese of North America. The Diocese of Toledo is led by His Grace Bishop Anthony and includes more than 45 churches and missions in Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Ohio, and Wisconsin.

Organization Overview:  I’m glad that you have taken the time to visit our website. We live in a world where people are hungry to find something solid, reliable and unchanging to feed their souls. Although many are distracted by entertainment masquerading as Christianity, or by the many concerns of this world, at their very hearts they know they need to get back to the ancient Apostolic roots of the Faith. This is the Orthodox Church. Saint George is one of the five Orthodox parishes in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Each parish is unique as well as fully joined to one another despite being in different jurisdictions (under different bishops). Our Grand Rapids parishes join together for worship, common events—like our Summer Youth program, and common causes. Saint George parish is the oldest Orthodox church in western Michigan, being first organized in 1906 and made a parish community in 1907 by Saint Raphael (Hawaweeny) of Brooklyn. We are part of the Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese of North America. Our community’s roots are from Lebanon, but there are many who have joined our parish from European ancestry too. We are a very warm and welcoming community. If you enjoy a good choir, then you will find a wonderful all volunteer choir here at Saint George. While we primarily sing music from the Byzantine tradition (which has been Americanized), we also sing some Russian music as well. If you are seeking a “holy space” in which to pray, then you will find one of the most beautiful churches in western Michigan here. You will find praying here deeply moving. If you desire to develop new friendships and a deeper Christian fellowship, you will be embraced by the warmth and charity of our parishioners. Join us for our coffee hour after the Divine Liturgy and allow us to introduce you to our community. If you want to understand the Faith better, then you will enjoy our adults’ Bible study or our Inquirers’ Classes. Whatever you are seeking, you will find in authenticity here at Saint George’s. We hope that if you are in Grand Rapids you will visit us, for you are most welcome. If you can’t make it here but are in need of prayers for yourself or for your loved ones, please send me their names so that we can pray for them. Please take your time and look over our website to find out more about Orthodox Christianity. May our great God and Saviour Jesus Christ bless you all.

Organization Overview:   St. John Armenian Church, named in honor of St. John the Baptist & Forerunner of Christ our God, has for 81 years been at the very heart and center of Armenian-American religious and cultural life in Metropolitan Detroit. Since the beginning, the parish has flourished and also reaches out to the Armenian Orthodox faithful who are scattered throught the state of Michigan. Through the efforts of past and present pastors sacramental services now have begun in both Lansing and Grand Rapids where new Armenian communities have taken root. St. John Armenian Church remains a model community in our Diocese in both the rites of worship and varied ministries within and outside of the parish by offering numerous educational programs and opportunities for Christian growth in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and the faith, tradition, customs and practices of the Armenian Orthodox Church. The varied ministries include: Children's Church School, Altar training, Junior and Senior youth groups, Bible Studies, Lenten Retreats, Women's and Men's groups, Senior Citizens, the learning of sacred music and singing with the Komitas Choir, Armenian cultural enrichment, and as well the Mardigian Research Library and the Alex and Marie Manoogian Museum. The parish groups take part in several Ecumenical missions with other Orthodox, Catholics and Protestants and also provide assistance to many charitable agencies both Armenian based in Armenia, throughout the USA and for local missions to name a few, such as The Alternatitives for Girls, Capuchin Soup Kitchen, Jefferson House for men, Forgotten Harvest, Orthodox Outreach of Detroit. Most importantly, as Orthodox Christians, we place the greatest emphasis in honoring and worshipping our God our Creator, invoking the All Holy Trinity - Father, Son and Holy Spirit asking for God's grace to imbue our faithful with a life of holiness. This greatest of all emphasis is reflected in the Mystery and Beauty offered to God every Sunday at our Divine Liturgy - receiving Holy Communion and taking part in other Canonical Services. All are invited to come to St. John Armenian Church and to worship and witness this profound Mystery and Beauty in our Divine Services and to join us in lifting our voices in praise and thankfulness to our loving Creator. Organization Overview:  St. Mary Orthodox Church is a parish of the Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese of north America. In February, 1972, St. Mary Antiochian Orthodox Church was born when a young priest named Fr. George Shalhoub was ordained and assigned to a small parish in Livonia, Michigan with no church building to call their own. Five years later, in 1977, the Community was blessed to have Metropolitan PHILIP preside over the dedication of their brand new church building located on Merriman road and finally had a place to call home. Then in 1991, the completion of the cultural center, next door to the church, opened and has been a consistent meeting place for the people of this parish. The goal for every ministry program at the Basilica of St. Mary is no different than the goal for leading a strong Orthodox Christian way of life. This goal is realized through providing opportunities for each person to be fully integrated into the total life of the Church by helping them to commit to living their faith through worship, witness, service and fellowship. The success of this goal is based upon building a foundation of strong relationships with each other that are rooted in love, honesty, trust, openness, respect and forgiveness. These six pillars of our Christian faith, when integrated together, work to build up a strong Christian way of life. To offer the entire Basilica of St. Mary community (Infant thru Seniors) a place in which they can come together with other Orthodox Christians to receive moral, ethical, and spiritual guidance based on our Orthodox Christian faith, providing a foundation for leading a Christ-centered life, and giving opportunities to spread Love, Joy, and Hope to our neighbors through works of mercy and outreach. A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you. By this all will know that you are My disciples. (John 13:34-35) With this goal in mind, the Basilica of St. Mary has in place many ministry programs for all members of the community to participate in, allowing them to not only internalize the six pillars, but to begin to put them into practice.

Organization Overview:  WHERE ARE WE? St. Nicholas Antiochian Orthodox Church stands out not only for its ancient faith but also its ancient Byzantine architecture. We are easily identified as the church with the dome. We are located at 2250 East Paris Ave. SE in the city of Kentwood right outside of Grand Rapids. We are minutes from the I-96 freeway and blocks from the major thoroughfare known as 28th Street. WHEN IS OUR SUNDAY SERVICE? Our principal service, the Divine Liturgy, is at 10:00 AM on Sunday. All visitors are invited and welcome! WHO ARE WE? St. Nicholas church in Grand Rapids, Michigan, is a parish of the Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese of North America. Regionally, we are part of the Diocese of Toledo and the Midwest. We are one of approximately 250 churces and missions in the USA and Canada. Our archdiocese is a part of the ancient Church of Antioch, mentioned in the New Testament. We are in full communion with the other historic Orthodox churches of Jerusalem, Alexandria, and Constantinople, as well as the other Eastern Orthodox churches throughout the world. WHAT DO ORTHODOX CHRISTIANS BELIEVE? The principal tenets of the Orthodox faith are contained in the Nicene/Constantinopolitan Creed (commonly called the Nicene Creed). Orthodox Christians believe in the Blessed Trinity, the Divinity of Christ, His virgin birth and His glorious resurrection. The Orthodox church is in direct continuity with the Church founded by Jesus Christ. It does not trace its origins to any other reformer or founder. The Orthodox Church is a very traditional church in matters of faith and worship. HOW DOES A PERSON BECOME A MEMBER OF THE ORTHODOX CHURCH? Ordinarily, a person becomes a member of the Orthodox Church by being born again of water and the Holy Spirit in the Sacraments of Baptism and Chrismation (Confirmation). Adults who have been baptized in non-Orthodox churches become members by a profession of faith and the Sacrament of Chrismation. This occurs after a period of instruction in the Orthodox faith.
