Civil Rights

Organization Overview:  Action works with organizations across the nation to reform America's immigration laws and ensure civil rights for all people, native born and immigrant. From informational conferences to organized bus trips for rallies in Washington D.C., CRI works to ensure the 7.6% of immigrant families in Lansing have a community voice heard by national ears. In February, the Civil Rights For Immigrants (CRI) task force took on the Secretary of State decision to deny DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) grantees their right to driver’s licenses. They met with allies, rallied at the state capital, met with the governor’s staff and held a press conference when the Secretary of State finally overturned her decision and gave DACA grantees their right to a driver’s license. CRI also created a free conference in March, called “Engaging our Community for Reform,” 200 people attended. This conference focused on immigrants, advocates, youth focusing on higher education, knowing your rights, and psychological well-being of immigrants in America. In April, Action organized a bus including constituents from four different cities to Washington D.C to join millions for a national rally where we met with our congressmen and senators advocating for comprehensive immigration reform. In May, the CRI task force organized a statewide prayer vigil outside Congressman Mike Rogers’s office. Over 100 people from Kalamazoo, Grand Rapids, Saginaw, Battle Creek and Lansing, demanded that Rogers and the House of Representatives pass comprehensive immigrations reform. In June, CRI task force also organized an “immigration story telling” event attended by 100 Lansing residents. In July, we rallied outside of GOP headquarters calling for immigration reform. In October Action of Greater Lansing organized a March and Rally outside of Congressman Mike Rogers requesting a face to face meeting. We got a public response from the Congressman that fueled a letter campaign to the editor regarding Roger’s actions. CRI Meets Monthly Last Tuesday of the Month at 7pm Cristo Rey Church: 201 W.
