Cultural & Artistic Activities

Organization Name:  BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir
Organization Overview:  A Mandir is a sacred Hindu place of worship. It represents the earthly home of Bhagwan, where one can visit to quiet the mind and experience spirituality. Visitors and devotees come to mandir to offer prayers before the murtis, or sacred images, as well as to attend cultural classes and religious services known as sabhas. BAPS Swaminarayan mandirs serve to both foster and further personal and collective worship. Pramukh Swami Maharaj, the spiritual leader and guru to BAPS, supports the establishment of mandirs as a means to cultivate peace within communities and connect individuals to Bhagwan. Mandirs represent a Vedic tradition of building, maintaining, and preserving physical spaces to uphold the philosophy of Hinduism. The rituals and traditions celebrated at mandirs connect individuals to their families, communities, and to Bhagwan. Mandirs ensure that the legacy of Hinduism's oldest teachings is shared with future generations for many years to come. The size of mandirs vary from small, simple shrines to elaborate stone edifices. BAPS mandirs are traditionally categorized as either 'shikharbadhha mandirs' or ‘hari mandirs’. Shikharbadhha mandirs are built largely of stone and signature architectural pinnacles whereas hari mandirs are built using modern materials such as steel, concrete, cement. Another major distinction is that in shikharbadhha mandirs, the aarti is performed five times daily, while in hari mandirs, the aarti is performed twice daily. In addition to spiritual practice, BAPS mandirs teach the arts, language, music, and philosophy that are the roots of Hindu heritage. BAPS mandirs also host various charitable efforts for local communities throughout the year such as walkathons, health fairs, blood drives, and more.

Organization Overview:  The Armenian Research Center at The University of Michigan-Dearborn is the only Armenian Research Center attached to an American university, and thus it has traditionally exhibited a leadership role in the field. The center serves the local community, along with the national Armenian community. This fortunate confluence of university resources and public interest presented a unique opportunity for the expansion of internal collaboration and external partnerships in research, teaching, and service. It provides this community with a valuable learning resource, provides educational materials, and helps to serve its cultural needs. It is this community which has provided the Center, and thereby the campus, with a valuable resource as a gift. The Armenian Research Center certainly adds a multicultural and international perspective to the educational process for students, which will help Americans in general to better understand the world and define their proper role in it.

Organization Overview:  Chinese Association of West Michigan (CAWM) The Chinese Association of West Michigan (CAWM) is a non-profit cultural organization, serving the West Michigan region including the Greater Grand Rapids area, Holland, Muskegon, Grand Haven, etc. There are over 600 members in the organization as of March 2005. While most of our members are of Chinese extraction, we have members who are from other ethnic backgrounds. We welcome folks from various races and religious beliefs to be part of our organization. Since its inauguration in 1991, the Chinese community in West Michigan has witnessed tremendous demographic growth. The Chinese population currently represents one of the fastest growing ethnic groups in the area. Most of the CAWM members work in the high-tech industries, manufacturing, higher education, information technologies, biotech research institutions and international trade industries. More and more highly educated Chinese professionals are relocating to West Michigan. Presently close to 100 Chinese PhD professionals and 40 university professors work in the area. The VanAndel Research Institute alone has over 30 Chinese medical researchers on its staff. And the number of medical researchers will likely grow as the Institute is geared to roll out its plan for a Graduate School in the near future. With China’s growing importance in global economy and increasing Sino-US trade and cultural exchanges, there is a growing presence of Chinese culture and an increasing interest in the Chinese culture/language among the West Michigan community, esp. in the Greater Grand Rapids area. A key mission of CAWM is to advance cross-cultural understanding between China and US and between the Chinese community and the other ethnic groups, and promote the rich Chinese cultural heritage and traditions in the region. One of the most influential reach-out events is the annual Chinese New Year Celebration Party Show. The two hour show offers a rich cultural feast to the West Michigan community by featuring unique cultural activities and a variety of artistic performances, including Chinese folk dance, chorus, solo, theatrical sketches, traditional Chinese instruments, ethnic costume show, and much more. The performance presents a beautiful combination of music, color, artistry and culture. 2005 was the fifth year CAWM has held the Chinese New Year event. With constant improvements over the years, this event has enjoyed increasing success, popularity and acclaim in the West Michigan community. CAWM attaches high importance to language and cultural education as an integral part of its mission. The Grand Rapids Chinese Language School, as a subsidiary to the CAWM, meets every Saturday throughout the semesters. The school provides students in the community the opportunity to learn their native language and maintain their cultural heritage. The school also offers people from other linguistic and cultural backgrounds an invaluable opportunity to learn the Chinese language for business and personal purposes and get acquainted with the Chinese culture. Due to the increasing importance of China in global economy, the demand for the Chinese language/culture is on the rapid increase in West Michigan as well as in other parts of the country and the world. As a result, the Chinese school is witnessing a rapid growth in recent years. Currently the school has over 10 classes with an enrollment of close to 100 students. Our students range from 4 years olds to working adults. CAWM also stresses the importance of making contributions to the local community and has been working closely with the local governments, education institutions, and other organizations to improve and enrich the lives of the community and make the community a better place to live.

Organization Name:  Clave
Organization Overview:  Led by Mary and Lisa Luevanos, CLAVE is a network of artists, cultural activists and supporters united for the promotion of Latino culture and arts. CLAVE believes this can only be done if the historical and artistic contributions of other communities, particularly of color, are also appreciated. The consular services to Mexicans residing in Michigan and Ohio date back to 1824, when the General Consulate of Mexico opened in New York. As the importance of the Mexican presence in the area increased, in the year 1920, the Mexican Career Consulate was inaugurated in Detroit, which in 1940 became part of the jurisdiction of the Consulate General of Mexico in Chicago. Until 2001, the Representation in Detroit was in charge of the State of Ohio. The jurisdiction of the Consulate has varied with the passage of time according to the opening and closing of representations. By agreement of the former Secretary of the branch, Jorge Castañeda Gutman, the current circumscription is the State of Michigan and the northern part of the State of Ohio, while the southern part corresponds to the Consulate in Indianapolis.
