Organization Overview:  Owned by People's Community Services (PCS), the H. Irving Mayson Hamtramck Center is a large facility with many resources for the community. Located on the south end of Hamtramck, a diverse community of long-time residents and recent immigrants, the center also has several classrooms used for arts and crafts, adult education and meetings. A large common room with comfortable seating houses pool tables, foosball and ice hockey tables. This room can also be set up for large meetings or used as a dining area to the adjacent full kitchen and pantry area. Community members also enjoy our full indoor gym and basketball court. More than 250 youth use the center each year and enjoy great programs such as the Youth Stay In School Initiative and many dynamic summer programs. ACCESS (Arab Community Center for Economic and Social Services) has an office onsite. This center also provides basic needs services for community members most in need including food assistance, clothing, employment, shelter, medical, and transportation. PCS has amazing success in being a resource for all ethnic groups in this area and encouraging participation from individual groups as well as dialogue between groups.

Organization Name:  Southeast Michigan Indians (SEMI)
Organization Overview:  About Us South Eastern Michigan Indians, Inc. "SEMII" Our History... In the early 1970's it was recognized that the cultural, economic and social needs of the Native American Indian Community required a central location in South Eastern Michigan. Many community members met and developed the By-laws to form South Eastern Michigan Indians, Inc. On May 30, 1975 South Eastern Michigan Indians, Inc. became a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization to deliver services to Native Americans in Macomb, Oakland, and St. Clair counties. In April of 1993, SEMII opened the doors of its new facility in Center Line, Michigan, where we continue to provide a broad base of services. Our Mission Statement... "...shall promote and develop Native American educational, economic, social and cultural opportunities by providing a location and source for information dissemination of maters of interest to Native Americans; by providing and sponsoring Native American exhibits, conferences, forums, cultural expositions and cultural education for the general public; and doing all such further work as shall be beneficial to the Indian community." Today, our Mission Statement remains the same as in 1975 and we have broadened the services we provide and developed other programs of outreach to not only the Native American community, but the broader community as well. Our original statement of purpose and activities continue to be carried.

Organization Overview:  Since 1961, the Chaldean American Ladies of Charity (CALC) has continually assisted the needy families of the metro Detroit area. The CALC is a nonprofit charitable organization that operates with over 98% of donations going directly to the less fortunate. We focus our efforts on enhancing the lives of the people in our community. Our time and volunteer efforts are spent helping those in need, encouraging our youth, providing care for senior citizens, and maintaining our culture within the diverse community in which we live. Metro Detroit’s 120,000 Chaldeans are the largest concentration outside the Middle East. The community’s growth spanning a century reflects economic, social and geopolitical factors. The majority of Chaldean Americans live in Michigan, although there are many in Illinois, Arizona, California and other countries like Australia, England and Mexico. Although Chaldean Americans constitute the bulk of Iraqi immigrants living in the United States, they represent less than 10 percent of the population of Iraq. While the vast majority of Iraqis, are Arab Muslim, Chaldeans are Roman Catholic. They also differ from other Iraqis in that their ancestral language is not Arabic but a dialect of Aramaic, also referred to as Chaldean, Assyrian or Syriac. The country of Chaldea was an ancient land in southern Babylonia, on the Persian Gulf near the delta of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers in the Middle East. In biblical times the name was applied to all of Babylonia & Mesopotamia. It is present day Iraq. CALC MISSION STATEMENT We are Chaldean American women energized by working together and with others to provide help and hope to those in need. We strive to preserve our heritage and enrich the community through awareness and advocacy, education and advice, and emotional and economic support. Our vision is to strengthen and preserve the Chaldean family by ensuring that all generations have access to necessary resources and services. The CALC has many volunteers that spend a substantial amount of time helping others and trying to raise funds and awareness of our mission. If you’d like to volunteer your time with the CALC, click here to fill out a volunteer information form. We appreciate your help!
